SCPlugin - Mac-only, integrates into Finder. Pysvn - another cross-platform client, free of course. SmartSVN - a cross-platform solution that will work on Windows, Mac and Linux. For completeness, I outlined the full process below. Although I expanded on it, I encourage you to read the original post. To give due credit, the foundations of this post came from a post on Building SVN 1.7. In typical lazy developer fashion, I went with updating SVN to version 1.7 for Mac OS X. A program called “Versions” has been available for a while, but it, sadly, epitomizes the style over substance sin that is so prevalent on the Mac. So, everybody was happy but us Mac folks. Windows folks had TortoiseSVN, and Linux folks wouldn’t be caught dead using anything other than command line tools (or, git, for that matter).

Jelly jump multiplication5/31/2023 I’ve never been this satisfied with a game like this so far. Overall, this game is amazing and if I could give it 6 stars I would. The way the jelly cube or whatever stands out against the background is astonishing, and I never get tired of looking at the colors. The colors have inspired me to make OCs using specific color palettes from the game. I am extremely happy with how the colors are used in this game, especially being an artist. Jelly Jump Math Game -division -Fun4theBrain Game Multiplication Games. Not to mention how it‘s so much more calming to play than other games where you get frustrated when you mess up or die. Self-grading math quizzes, a fun town of friendly monsters, and 100+ games. I love the fact that there’s a 2 player mode as well, it makes things a lot more interesting when you’re playing with a friend. I absolutely love this game! There aren’t many ads, and the ones that you do happen to come across aren’t noticeable or they don’t hinder your ability to play the game, so I don’t get bored after watching too many ads. I absolutely love this game, there just some minor bug fixings you need to tend to and my suggestion, if you added my suggestion the game would be even better that before! Also, you should add more characters too! But I love this game anyways!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□❤️□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□□ Otherwise this is one of the top best games I've ever played! And I was so endorsed in my joy of this game that literally all my friends have this game, and if one doesn't have it I won't recommend in enough to them!!❤️❤️❤️ However, I have one suggestion: it would be really really cool of you to add where you can get the same character twice, and then you can be able to sell the double character for like 50 jelly makers (the jelly that's used to make new characters.) I can't even begin on how good this game is!! I absolutely love it!!!! I got it only a day ago, and I'm literally addicted!! I'm a serious game critic and it's hard to have a game last a couple of days with with me that will keep my interest! I love the characters and the gameplay itself! There is one bug in particular that always happens, after I un-jellied (when you get stuck or die) I can't get off that one character! I don't mind it I just have to restart the game. Franz kafka novelist5/31/2023 This total lack of understanding and the absence of any home life worthy the name (young Franz was virtually brought up by a nurse) caused the boy's early seriousness and anxiety. To one extent or another, all of Kafka's works bear the unmistakable imprint of the nerve-wracking struggle between his humility and hypersensitivity (his mother's heritage) and the crudity and superficiality of his father, who looked at his son's writing with indifference and, at times, with contempt. Kafka's only strong, positive ties with his family were with his favorite sister, Ottla, who let him stay at her home and later helped him break off his relationship with Felice Bauer, his first finance. Throughout his lifetime, Franz Kafka could never extricate himself from the terrible friction between his parents, which was caused, for the most part, by his tyrannical father. Kafka's father's whole life was shaped by his desperate and eventually successful attempt to break out of his poor Czech milieu and become accepted in the prestigious environment of German Prague his mother, however, came from a wealthy German-Jewish bourgeois family. The great socio-economic and educational differences between his father, Hermann Kafka, and his mother, Julie Löwy, were at the root of this complex situation. Kafka's family situation was a reflection of his being a German-speaking Jew in a predominantly Slavic environment. This absence of any gap between the spoken and written word in his language is probably the secret behind the enormous appeal of his language, whose deceptive simplicity comes across in every decent translation. The result was that Kafka actually wrote in a language which was on the verge of developing its own characteristics. Prague was a linguistic island as far as German was concerned, and while the Czech population of Prague doubled within the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the percentage of German Jews sank to a mere seven percent. His simple, sober, and yet dense language is traced to the fact that in Prague the German language had been exposed to manifold Slavic influences for centuries and was virtually cut off from the mainstream language as spoken and written in Germany and Austria. The haunting mood of Prague's narrow, cobblestoned streets, its slanted roofs, and its myriad backyards comes alive in the surreal settings of Kafka's stories. To this day, however, Kafka's tiny flat in Alchemists' Lane behind the towering Hradschin Castle is a major attraction for those in search of traces of Kafka. To understand Kafka, it is important to realize that in Prague the atmosphere of medieval mysticism and Jewish orthodoxy lingered until after World War II, when the Communist regime began getting rid of most of its remnants. Apart from that, however, it is about as meaningful as considering Faulkner an English novelist.įor his recurring theme of human alienation, Kafka is deeply indebted to Prague and his situation there as a social outcast, a victim of the friction between Czechs and Germans, Jews and non-Jews. Kafka's name is also grouped too often with German writers, which is accurate only in the sense that he belongs to the German-speaking world. Prague was the major second capital of the Austrian Empire (after Vienna) since the early sixteenth century, and although Kafka was no friend of Austrian politics, it is important to emphasize this Austrian component of life in Prague because Kafka has too often been called a Czech writer - especially in America. In addition to Kafka's German, Czech, and Jewish heritages, there was also the Austrian element into which Kafka had been born and in which he had been brought up. But even if Kafka had not been Jewish, it is hard to see how his artistic and religious sensitivity could have remained untouched by the ancient Jewish traditions of Prague which reached back to the city's tenth-century origin. His close relationship with Dora Dymant, his steady and understanding companion of his last years, contributed considerably toward this development. Although Kafka became extremely interested in Jewish culture after meeting a troupe of Yiddish actors in 1911, and although he began to study Hebrew shortly after that, it was not until late in his life that he became deeply interested in his heritage. In short, Kafka shared the fate of much of Western Jewry - people who were largely emancipated from their specifically Jewish ways and yet not fully assimilated into the culture of the countries where they lived. Yet from the Czech point of view, Kafka was German, and from the German point of view he was, above all, Jewish. Born in Prague in 1883, Franz Kafka is today considered the most important prose writer of the so-called Prague Circle, a loosely knit group of German-Jewish writers who contributed to the culturally fertile soil of Prague during the 1880s until after World War I. What about you?Ĭassell’s Household Guide, Vol. There’s still no reliable cure for the common cold. Today, cough syrup with codeine has come to replace tinctures of belladonna and sniffs of chloroform, but as I write this-coughing and sniffling-I can’t say that we’re much better off than our nineteenth century ancestors. Ten drops should be dropped into the palm of the hand, and the vapour quietly inhaled.” “Chloroform, used as an inhalation, is useful in many kinds of spasmodic cough. If a cough was truly severe, the Victorian doctor might even prescribe a dose of chloroform or nitric acid. The Convalescent by Gustave Léonard de Jonghe (1829-1893), n.d. “A drachm of tincture of belladonna is to be added to an eight-ounce bottle of water, and of this a tea-spoonful may be taken every two hours, with an additional dose when the cough is very troublesome.” The 1886 Family Physician recommends solutions of morphia or tinctures of belladonna. These syrups are well adapted to cases of long-continued cough in children, hystericky females, chronic bronchitis, whooping-cough, and in consumption”įor more persistent coughs, there were even stronger remedies. Onion syrup may be made in the same way as the garlic syrup. “To make Garlic Syrup, mash the garlic, add warm water, and allow it to stand half an hour, but not heated then squeeze through a cloth and add sugar. Comfort recommended “pepper tea” or a syrup comprised of “equal portions lobelia powder, powdered licorice root, finely pulverized skunk cabbage root, and sugar.” For coughs of long standing, vegetable balsams-specifically garlic or onion syrup-were considered to be especially beneficial. In these cases, doctors often prescribed special teas or syrups (*see my post on Tea and Sympathy). Sold in packets at chemist’s shop, Cooper’s Sinapine Tissues claimed to be “far superior” to ordinary mustard plasters in that they were clean, portable, and never blistered the skin.Īdvertisement for Cooper’s Sinapine TissueĬassell’s Family Continental Handbook, 1872.įor many patients, the mustard plaster alone wasn’t enough to alleviate a cough and congestion. Later in the century, mustard plasters could be bought ready made in the form of mustard papers like Cooper’s Sinapine Tissue. “It is well to interpose a piece of thin gauze or muslin between the mustard and the skin this does not in any way interfere with the action of the application, and prevents portions of the mustard adhering to the skin, and irritating it, after the removal of the cataplasm.” In his 1852 Dictionary of Domestic Medicine and Household Surgery, Dr. Alternating the application between chest and back was also recommended, as was the use of cloth as a barrier between the plaster and the skin. To combat this, most Victorian practitioners advised leaving the plaster on for no more than twenty to thirty minutes. In children, or adults with sensitive skin, prolonged application of a mustard plaster could cause blistering. The Convalescent by Charles Baugniet, 1880. “A freshly-prepared mustard plaster measuring about 9 inches by 6 is to be applied daily and left on the whole night, or even for twenty-four hours.” According to the 1892 edition of the International Medical Annual and Practitioner’s Index: Once mixed to a paste, the mustard plaster was applied to either the chest or the back. If it is desired to weaken the plaster, wheat or rye flour may be added.” “A simple mustard plaster may be prepared by mixing ground mustard and warm water to form a proper consistency for a plaster. John Comfort explains in his 1853 publication on The Practice of Medicine on Thomsonian Principles: At full strength, it was little more than a mixture of ground mustard and warm water. Did they take to their beds and slowly succumb? Or were there plasters and potions to help them through it? In fact, Victorians had a multitude of (sometimes questionable) medicinals at their disposal.įor most of the era, a mustard plaster was the gold standard for treating a cough and cold. One wonders how our nineteenth century forbears managed in similar circumstances. Between the coughing, congestion, and laryngitis, it’s been difficult to function. The cold that’s going around this season is intense. The Invalid by William Powell Frith, 1890. Photocopy printer5/31/2023 When you’re deciding between the two, consider how much toner or ink will cost you over the operational lifespan of the MFP you buy or lease. Laser printers use a powdered toner, whereas inkjet printers use liquid ink. For large businesses that need a fast printer for multiple high-quantity jobs per day, a laser printer is the best option in terms of efficiency and convenience. These will cost you double or triple the amount of the machine and replacement cartridges, but they print at much higher rates, and the cartridges do not need to be replaced nearly as often. If you are willing to pay more upfront for efficiency, look into a laser copier instead of inkjet. Laser printing costs about 6 to 8 cents per page (including color prints), compared with 10 to 20 cents per page for inkjet printers. You also get decent output with crisp text and finer lines, but the image quality is less than stellar.Īlthough laser printers are generally more expensive than inkjet printers, they save you money in the long run because you won’t need to purchase and replace toner as often as you would ink cartridges. A laser printer offers the convenience of high-volume printing at fast speeds - even low-end laser printers can print up to 20 pages per minute (ppm) - so no one wastes time waiting for documents to print. If you have large print jobs that are mostly black text with minimal graphics, however, you’ll get the most bang for your buck with a laser printer. Businesses that don’t have a lot of space may also prefer an inkjet printer because it is smaller and more portable than a laser printer. It’s also the best solution for companies that require colored printing and high-quality images, such as media companies, marketers and real estate firms. laserĪn inkjet printer is the best and most economical option for businesses that don’t have a high volume of printing jobs or print only a few pages at a time. However, you also need to weigh the cost savings with the impact on your branding and customers, as color images tend to be more eye-catching than monochrome images. Supply costs will be lower if you have to purchase only one cartridge at a time rather than four. Color printers, by contrast, require four separate cartridges: black, cyan, yellow and magenta. Monochrome printers typically cost less than color printers because they use only one cartridge: black. There are many factors to consider when choosing a copy machine or MFP, including the type of ink, whether you want the device to print in color and its size. What are the different types of copiers and MFPs? MFPs connect to your Wi-Fi network and provide a host of features to meet your advanced business-related printing and copying needs – all in one purchase. They can be purchased or leased, and many accessories are available for most models. These MFPs are designed to meet business printing needs while cutting supply costs and increasing productivity. More advanced models can be customized with finishing options, like stapling, hole punching and sorting. Multifunction printers combine the functions of printers and color copiers, and they can also fax and scan to locations such as email, USB drives and cloud-based services. Modern printers are more sophisticated than ever and combine the functionality of both a copy machine and printer into a multifunction printer (MFP). Today’s printers have come a long way from the original, bulky machines that had only one function - to provide printouts.
